Anyone who saw the movie or read the book, 'Out of Africa' will know who Karen Blixen was. She had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. It was Meryl Streep who played the role of Blixen in the 1985 movie that won seven Academy Awards and was nominated for a further four and it was this movie that shot Blixen, and the town of Karen (which was named after her), to prominence. Indeed it was only after the huge success of the film that the museum was created.
The Museum is now open daily from 09:30 to 6pm. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the house, which features a mixture of rooms - some still fitted out in the original decor and others with props from the 1985 film. The grounds of the old coffee farm can also be toured. The museum also boasts a gift shop. The venue can be booked for functions like weddings or corporate events.
