How They Dazzle Us

Beautiful Chumbe Island one of only two, self-financing Marine Protection Areas in the world that is entirely funded by eco-tourism. Through effective management in cooperation with local people, the project has ensured that the Reef Sanctuary is one of the most pristine in the region, with more than 480 marine fish species, 150 species of marine invertebrates and 59 genera of hard corals. The Forest Reserve is one of the last undisturbed semi-arid ‘coral rag’ forests in Zanzibar and a sanctuary to the highly endangered and endemic Aders’ Duiker and Coconut Crab.

Why We Love Them

Not just talking a good game ecologically, Chumbe is also financially sustainable. The project operates as a not-for-profit enterprise, where all revenue generated by ecotourism is ploughed back into the management of the MPA. This made Chumbe the first financially self-sustaining MPA in the world.

Their Sustainable Superpower

An almost zero-impact eco-lodge on the island, Chumbe Coral Park combines traditional building styles and materials with modern eco-architecture. It makes use of the latest technology for water and energy provision and waste avoidance and recycling, taking full advantage of sunlight, natural ventilation and rainwater, with rainwater catchment, vegetative gray water filtration, composting toilets, solar water heating and photovoltaic power generation.
