How They Dazzle Us
Singita has become synonymous with both sustainable ecotourism and style and this Landing was the original Singita lodge, so in a sense it sets the benchmark in style and design. Set among the enormous trees on the banks of the Sand River this Landing offers guests a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the safaris of yesteryear. Combining the design highlights of tented camps and bush lodges this Landing was inspired by the adventure and charm of old-world explorers’ camps. You might almost expect to see David Livingstone or Henry Morton Stanley popping out of their room for a spot of banter. Each room features campaign-style furniture, natural fibres and polished wood while almost all external walls have been replaced with glass and canvas to optimise views and space.

Lions may be the king of the jungle and cheetahs may be the fastest land animals, but the truth is the most impressive animal to view in the wild is the leopard. And Singita Ebony Lodge is in the heart of Leopard country. Sightings of this solitary predator are frequent and captivating and they make a trip to this Landing instantly worthwhile. Ebony Lodge doesn’t just offer leopard encounters set as it is in the midst of 45,000 acres of an incredible wildlife sanctuary that is also renowned for its high concentration of big game.

Singita is a company that owns and runs 15 Landings in four different countries, but this is where it all started back in 1993. When it started the goal was to preserve and protect large areas of African wilderness for future generations and that remains the goal to this day. In terms of establishing a track-record, this is naturally the Landing that is best able to showcase their commitment to the ecotourism. The primary task since Singita Ebony Lodge was opened was in ensuring that the land, complete with its diverse flora and fauna, remained as close as possible to the untouched state in which the Bailes family found it some 85 years ago. Early aerial photographs, from as far back as 1935, have been used by the team as a template to guide them in achieving this task. And their success is easily measured by the thriving wildlife populations and a flourishing ecosystem that has in fact created new challenges - an abundance of species, such as rhino, that carry a high price tag in the global illegal wildlife trade, that have attracted international poaching syndicates to the area. As a result the second main focus area has become establishing a dedicated anti-poaching unit tasked with ensuring the safety of these precious natural assets.
