How They Dazzle Us
The scale of the Lost City is quite astounding, and it is hard not to be dazzled by it. It is a massive project and one that has appealed to and gripped tourists from around the world since The Palace first opened in 1992. A bit like an African Disneyland meets Las Vegas, The Palace is a superb Landing in the middle of a jungle set atop a volcanic crater that last erupted one million years ago. It's encircled by four mountains and has a game reserve on its doorstep. It certainly does not lack when it comes to wow factor.

It's the chutzpah of this project that we admire and love the most. It takes a lot of courage and a big vision to build a massive luxury hotel in the middle of nowhere and hope that people will come. But come they did, proving over and over again that the Lost City is a special place and a Landing that needs to be seen to be believed. Aside from the luxury, the fine dining serving delicious fresh foods sourced from local producers and the outstanding golf and the game viewing, there is still so much more to do. You might think it is a retreat or a place to go to get away from it all, but it isn't. It boasts more than you can imagine, and it is hard not to be charmed by it all.

While some might question the scale and opulence that brought Sun City into being, what cannot be faulted in the fact that in establishing the Lost City, the team here did an enormous amount to benefit the environment. In seeking to create the ambience of a lost city the architects and designers spent a considerable amount of effort, time and capital in planting a jungle. The forest alone features 3 200 species of plants, shrubs and trees. To create a baobab forest, 380 mature trees were brought in, including some of the biggest specimens ever transplanted. Several are hundreds of years old and the largest weighs as much as 75 tons. We love that they are involved with carbon reduction projects, they minimize their electricity and water usage wherever possible and have set a zero –waste -to -landfill goal for 2020.
