How They Dazzle Us

The Silo Hotel is a remarkable amalgamation of architecture, design, African art, and luxurious service and style. Once an old grain silo, the building has been converted by world famous Thomas Heatherwick of London based Heatherwick studios into the luxury hotel and contemporary African art museum (Zeitz MOCAA) that it is today. The Silo Hotel has attracted an enormous amount of international exposure and together with Zeitz MOCAA act as major draw cards for Cape Town.

Why We Love Them

We love innovation and out-the-box solutions and this Landing is certainly that. Named on Conde Nast Traveller’s 2018 Hot List this is a Landing that really needs to be experienced. The combination of Heatherwick’s exterior design, and Liz Biden’s (owner of The Royal Portfolio) interior design of The Silo Hotel, has created a unique space within the heart of Cape Town that every visitor to South Africa should experience. The greatest visible change to the building’s original structure is the addition of ingenious windows that have been inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors. These multi-faceted windows bulge outward as if gently inflated and by night they transform the building into a glowing beacon in the harbour.

There is nothing quite like working with what you have. In an era when so many old buildings are knocked down and new ones created, this hotel’s very existence is a triumph of sustainability and urban renewal. The fact that they are a huge part of an ecosystem that has been created to promote Africa art and culture makes it a real winner.
