There was a time not too long ago when poaching had ensured that there were no more rhino in Meru National Park. It took a huge ammount of work to remedy the situation but it has been done. Private establishments like Elewana, in tandem with Kenyan Wildlife Services have been key in restoring the ecosystems and reintroducing animals to the area. The area now boasts 24 hour rhino surveillance which was introduced in 2003 and a specialised poaching intelligence unit. KWS has also installed a 20,750 acre rhino sanctuary which now protects a population of over 70 white and black rhino. The area is well worth a vist, not just to see these incredible animals, but also to marvel at the fantastic conservation work that is taking place.
