How They Dazzle Us

The sheer privilege of being the only Landing inside this vast and well established conservancy is truly something special. The Landing consists of just 11 tents who collectively share access to 65,000 acres of private protected wilderness. There is no queuing to take your turn to see a kill or traffic jams at rare sightings. In an area that teems with game – much of it rare and endangered – it is such a joy to not have to compete with hordes of tourists.

Why We Love Them

Who doesn’t love a success story – especially when it’s comfortable and luxurious at the same time? This wonderful Landing is a huge part of the success story that has helped sustain rhino populations in East Africa. Previously a cattle ranch, the visionary owners David and Delia Craig, initially set aside 5000 acres to protect and breed rhinos, after their population dropped precipitously from 20,000 to less than 300 in the 1970s. Within a decade, the success of the project drove demand for more space and, in 1995 the Craigs decided to dedicate their entire ranch to the conservation of wildlife. What is not to love about that?

Their Sustainable Superpower

Registered as a rhino conservancy as long ago as 1983, this is the only Landing within the confines of the conservancy and it is famous for its successful rhino and Grevy zebra breeding. These two critically endangered species have done well here and Lewa is now home to ten percent of Kenya’s rhino, and twenty percent of the world's population of Grevy zebra. The whole conservancy is fenced, and the conservancy employs over 150 rangers. The conservancy does extensive outreach work into the surrounding communities with its Community Development Program, including healthcare, education, micro-finance, and water projects – in order to share with the community the benefits of wildlife.
