At 3700m high Mount Bisoke is exactly what you expect a volcano to look like - it has steep side, a conical shape and a deep crater, that in this instance is filled with water to make a crater lake. It is not an easy hike to the summit of the volcano although it is by no means unattainable. The walk takes the whole day, although at a push you can reach the top in about three hours.
The walk goes through three distinct areas of vegetation. It starts with bamboo forests, before morphing into Hypericum forest and finally into scrubby Lobelia bush near the summit. Those wishing to do the hike should note that a park fee needs to be paid. The fee includes a guide to accompany you. No advance booking is necessary and the permit can be purchased on the day of the trek.
