It’s tiny at just 31 hectares but despite this Buhanga Sacred Forest is a site of great beauty and huge ecological importance. It is regarded a hidden gem and a must visit destination if you are in the area. Best visited in the early morning or late afternoon when the birds are at their vociferous best the forest is accessed via a network of trails hewn from cut lava rocks. Stroll in the shade of majestic trees and soak in the sight of many different birds and brightly coloured butterflies. From the many observation platforms walkers are able to take in all that the forest has to offer. The patches of open and closed forest provide excellent opportunities for watching the usually secretive birds and enjoying the enchanting atmosphere.
