Jamaica has produced some extraordinary people, from Bob Marley, Usain Bolt and Lennox Lewis. It is the land of reggae music, rum and Blue Mountain coffee. It was also famously the first tropical country to send a bobsledding team to the Winter Olympics - the inspiration for the hit 1993 film Cool Runnings.

Family and religion are of utmost importance to Jamaicans, with more churches per square kilometre than any other country. Well over half of the country’s economy is powered by tourism, which is responsible for a quarter of their jobs. Subsistence and small commercial fishing businesses are common, though this trade has in recent times threatened Jamaica’s marine life. The Nature Conservancy is working with local government to establish zoning plans for marina managed areas and promote more sustainable fishing practices.

The Jamaican tourist season, which runs from December to April sees high volumes of visitors, so flight and accommodation must be booked well in advance for these periods. If you’re willing to brave a bit of rain, the temperatures are still high October to December and April to June.
