Why We Love Them
The forests of Siberia are incredible as is the trans-Siberian rail experience. The Russian Riviera on the Black Sea and the majesty of the world’s deepest lake in lake Baikal are also fantastic. But for us it was the cities of Moscow and St Petersburg that are the biggest talking points. Russia is a nation of extremes which means that there are as many good things as there are bad. From the amazing wild of the Siberian forests to the pollution choked cities, Russia is a land of contrasts. In terms of a superpower the country’s biggest strength is probably its wins on the public transport front. Bicycles are easy to rent in the big cities and its network of trains and trolleybuses carry millions on a daily basis, doing so in efficient, carbon-free style. Interestingly most Russians do not own their own cars.

Best Time to Visit
Russia is vast and the climate very varied. Temperatures plummet in the winter months with January typically the coldest, with averages well into the negatives. The wettest months are October and November. From a general comfort and sightseeing perspective, the best time to visit is in June. This is the season when weather is the warmest and the long hours of daylight make for it extremely convenient getting around.

Unique Foods
Above all else Russia is famous for its soups. There are many varieties, both hot and cold. Look out for Shchi, Ukha and Rassolnik which are cabbage, fish and cucumber based respectively. But most famously look out for Borscht, which is a thick vegetable-based broth that is as much associated with Russia as Vodka – which is another thing you should look out for on your travels.
