But this focus on mass tourism development has not been without costs with critics pointing out that foreign tourists tend to consume more vital resources than local people and generate more waste and pollution. The expected benefits to the local people who end up employed within the industry are limited to low-skilled, and low-paying work while the increased foreign travellers have meant higher prices and segregation from tourists in the coastal areas, where they appear to have lost the right to access beaches and other coastal lands. So, it is a difficult space that has been created and which the government are now seeking to address.

Best Time to Visit

The temperatures can be extreme in summer and winter which means the best times to visit are in spring and autumn, which are more moderate. As such April to May and September to mid-November are regarded as the perfect times to visit Istanbul and the inland regions because the temperatures are pleasant, and the skies are clear.

Unique Foods

For the most part Turkish food is a mixture of Arab and Mediterranean influences. Things like baklava, mezze and shish kebabs are all common. Look out though for the north-western delicacy the İskender Kebab. It is a meat dish that is both unique and spectacular. Manti is a type of Turkish pasta, much like Ravioli. It probably goes without saying that Turkish Delight is worth a try as well. While the origins of this sugar and starch based sweet are unknown they became famous in Turkey in the 1700s and have been associated with the country since then.
