Crazy as it may seem, in winter it is not uncommon for snow to fall on Piton des Neiges, the volcanic mountain that gave birth to the island. The dry season is May to October, with temperatures 20-25°C. November to March is more humid.

Two of the most common dishes are Rougail saucisses, which is a sausage stew that also contains, spice, tomatoes and turmeric. It is served with rice. A second is civet de zourites which is baby octopus cooked in red wine, with herbs and spices.
